Abstract

In a process for producing a phenol from a starting material comprising cyclohexanone, cyclohexanol, or a lower alkyl ring-substituted derivative of either of these compounds, the starting material is diluted with hydrogen in an amount of 0.02 to 0.3 gms. of hydrogen per gram of starting compound and thereafter is contacted with a specially prepared Pt-on-C catalyst at 250-425 DEG C., LHVS of 0.3 to 2.5 and the phenol is recovered. The starting material may be a crude oxygenated cyclohexone fraction. Comparative examples are given and reference is made to the preparation of phenol itself, cresols and other phenols from cyclohexanol and alkyl derivatives having up to 5 carbon side chains.ALSO:A dehydrogenation Pt on C catalyst is made by refluxing an aqueous solution of a Pt compound in admixture with activated carbon for at least 10 minutes whereby Pt is deposited on the activated carbon to form a 5% Pt on C catalyst, separating the catalyst from solution and drying. Prior to treatment with (NH4)2 PtCl6 for example the carbon may be refluxed with HCl and washed with water. Comparative examples are given.
