Abstract

[Also in Division F2] The sealing means for the stand pipe of a nuclear reactor pressure vessel includes a piston and cylinder assembly with mutually opposed steps in their cylindrical surfaces, and a sealing ring groove 22 at one of the steps with a sealing ring 26 in the groove 22, the sealing ring being adapted to make a face seal in contact with the step, and a piston seal with the cylindrical surface when not in contact with the step. The cylinder or casing 2 is stepped to provide a narrow inclined face 12 and a limit stop formed by an inclined face 16, the piston or closure member 18 having a matching inclined locating surface 20, the ring 26 being lightly pinched between the top 30 of the groove 22 and the face 12. When the closure member 18 is raised by internal pressure to its upper limit as in Fig. 2 (not shown), the ring 26 moves up the face 12 and is expanded to act as a piston seal whereas in Fig. 1 the ring acts as a face seal. The angle of the face 12 may be varied from 60‹ (Fig. 4, not shown) to 30‹ (Fig. 5, not shown). This face may also be concave (Fig. 6, not shown) or convex (Fig. 7, not shown). In a further aspect of the invention the sealing ring 26<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 3) is moulded so that the flash 46 of the moulding is at an angle such that in operation the flash 46 is never in contact with a sealing surface.
