A straight bar knitting machine comprises a rotary device for feeding yarn positively without slip to the thread carrier during its traverse, the rate of yarn delivery from the thread carrier being varied according to whether yarn is being laid without measuring, measured without being laid or both measured and laid. As shown, bar 2 carrying thread carrier 1 is releasably secured to a friction box 3 on a rail 5 carried by a slur bar 6. A rack 6a on slur bar 6 meshes with a gear 6b. on a shaft 6c carrying a pinion 6d meshing with a rack 6e of draw mechanism 6f of which the draw cam 6g causes reciprocation of box 3. The traverse of carrier 1 is variable by lugs 1a which engage adjustable stop lugs 1c. Slur cock 6i slidable on slur rail 6j is connected to slur bar 6 which has a rack 6k which drives rod 7 through rack and pinion 7a at half the speed of the slur cocks. Yarn Y is fed by rollers 8a, 8b mounted on box 3, roller 8b being driven through an adjustable epicyclic gear device 9 by rod 7 and a rack 3a parallel thereto. The drive from device 9 comprises bevel gears 16, 17 slidable so that one or the other engages the pinion 18 driving roller 8b. Gears 16, 17 are controlled through a pivoted connection 15 engaged at opposite sides by spaced cam strikers 15a, 15b on the slur bar 6. Roller 8a is mounted on a pivoted arm 21 having a peg 21a which engages a star-like wheel 22 with alternating shallow and deep grooves 22a, 22b racked on one of each groove per course by ratchet means 23 operated by a rocking rod 25 with spaced cam arms 26, 27 secured on sleeves 26a, 27a. The latter are slidably keyed on rocking rod 25 and are rockable by a peg 28 on slur bar 6, and are adjustable by connections to the selvedge stops 1d, 1e. Device 31 controls the slack in the yarn near rollers 8a, 8b.
