Abstract

Twice as much treatment medium is supplied to a web as it is desired shall be absorbed, and the concentration of the medium is adjusted to ensure that the measured excess is equal to that to be absorbed. As shown fibre F is fed by rolls 2a-2d through a trough 1 containing dressing material. Fresh dressing material is withdrawn from a tank 8 by a pump 7 and passed to a chamber 9 where it is mixed with superheated steam and/or hot water supplied through conduits 11 and 12 respectively. The mixture is stirred by a motor 34 and supplied through a conduit 3 to trough 1. Dressing material not taken up by the fibre flows into a container 5 from which it is withdrawn by a pump 6 and returned to trough 1 through conduit 3. By operating valves 31, 33, 62, 72 the outputs of pumps 6 and 7 may be temporarily diverted to measuring devices 63, 73 with the aid of which the output of material from each pump may be adjusted to equal that taken up by the fibre so that, during normal operation, twice as much dressing as is necessary is supplied. Variations in the flow of material into container 5, representing variations in the amount of material taken up by the fibre, cause a plastic coated float 15 to operate an inductive pick-off 16 associated with an indicating instrument 17 the pointer of which operates contacts (not shown) controlling the opening and closing of a steam valve 13 and, for large variations, the opening and closing of a hot water valve 14 to vary the concentration of the dressing material and thus restore the amount of material taken up by the fibre to the desired value. The actuators of valves 13 and 14 are operated intermittently to prevent hunting. Pumps 6 and 7 are driven from the main machine shafting 30 through gearing 61, 71 which may be variable, but, when the machine is running slowly or stopped, a motor 64 may ensure circulation of the dressing material by pump 6. Under the latter conditions valves 31, 32 may be operated so that the output of pump 6 is supplied through chamber 9. Output from pump 6 may also pass through a valve 35 to provide additional dressing above the rolls if desired. Application to the glueing of paper webs and the impregnation of cloth webs is referred to.
