[Also in Division Dl] A liquid spray device comprises a spray tube 3 having perforations in the walls thereof along the length of the tube, at least one partition 14, 15 located within the tube 3 to define compartments 4, 5, 6 in the tube in the longitudinal direction thereof and liquid supply pipes 7, 8, 9 connected to the compartments 4, 5, 6, which pipes 7, 8, 9 can be regulated and shut off. The device is used to restore the surface 2, comprising a cotton cover, of a flexible roller 1 in a calender. The liquid is supplied from a gravity tank 10 which may be in the form of a bar extending above and connecting the sides of the calender rollers. Magnetic valves 11, 12, 13 regulating the pipes 7, 8, 9 can be actuated either by press buttons or by time switches. Pistons 14, 15 provided with threaded spindles 16, 17 which are rotatable but axially fixed define the compartments 4, 5, 6, guide rods 20, 21 preventing rotation of the pistons 14, 15. In use, the pistons 14, 15 are first positioned to adjust the size of the compartments 4, 5, 6 according to the location of the depressions on the cover 2. As the roller 1 rotates continuously the cover 2 is thoroughly moistened and made to swell. The liquid supply is cut off, and the roller 1 is heated indirectly and rotated until it is dry. The procedure may be repeated. A feed device for a soaking agent, if used, comes into operation in dependence on the liquid level in the tank 10 measured on an instrument 31. The agent is held in concentrated form in a flexible bag 28 in a rigid tank 25 filled with water. The tank 25 is connected, through a pipe 26, to a pipe 27 supplying fresh water and the bag 28 is also connected, through a pipe 29, to the pipe 27. When valves 30, 39 are open water pressure acts on the bag 28 to cause the soaking agent to flow continuously into the pipe 27, the valve 30 being opened when the level in the tank 10 falls below that desired. The amounts of soaking agent and water are regulated by a throttle valve 35 and a valve 33 respectively. If the bag 28 becomes nearly empty the valve 39 is closed and the tank 25 emptied through a pipe 37, an air escape valve also being opened. The soaking agent is thus sucked into the bag 28 through a branch 40. Valves 36, 41 are then closed and the valve 39 opened and the valve 38 is closed after the tank 25 is full.
