Abstract

Vitreous fibres, e.g. quartz and glass, are lubricated by subjecting them in a fluid medium having a dielectric constant greater than 10, e.g. water or acetone, to ultrasonic vibrations and then immersing them in a suspension of a powder of a heat stable dry lubricant which is effective at temperatures up to at least 1000 DEG F., e.g. boran nitride graphite and molybdenum sulphide, in a fluid medium having a dielectric constant less than 10, e.g. normal heptone. The fibres may also be subjected to ultrasonic vibrations during their treatment with the suspension of the dry lubricant in the fluid medium having a dielectric constant less than 10.
