Abstract

Stresses in cables made from synthetic linear polyamides are removed by treating the cables with hot, acid-free mineral oil. The temperature of treatment is preferably between 100 DEG C. and 10 DEG C. below the melting-point of the polyamide from which the cable is made. The oil may contain an antioxidant. The treatment may be applied in a continuous or a discontinuous manner to cable which may be relaxed or under tension. In an example, a cable of poly-S -caprolactam is treated with Tellus No. 41 oil at 140 DEG C. The tensile strength after treatment is compared with that of similar cable treated with hot water. The treated cable contains 12% by weight of oil.ALSO:Stresses in cables made from synthetic linear polyamides are removed by treating the cables with hot, acid-free mineral oil. The treatment may be applied in a discontinuous or a continuous manner to cable which may be relaxed or under tension. In an example, a cable of poly-e -caprolactum, is treated with Tellus No. 41 oil at 140 DEG C. The tensile strength after treatment is compared with that of similar cable treated with hot water. The oil-treated cable contains 12% by weight of oil.
