Abstract

1,011,761. Photo-electric yarn inspection. WILLIAM EWART & SON Ltd. Feb. 21, 1962 [Nov. 25, 1960], No. 40589/60. Heading G1A. Yarn, wire and the like is classified by measuring its diameter photo-electrically and analysing diameter variations according to length and magnitude of variation. The yarn under test, 10 passes in front of a photo-cell to give an output indicative of diameter. The output is compared with the output of a second cell which has before it an adjustable shutter whereby a nominal diameter is set. The difference output from unit 11A is fed to a meter 14 having limit contacts 15 which operate either a yarn cutter 12 or recorders 16 for over- and under-nominal yarn diameter. The difference signal is also applied to threshold gates 19, 22 which emit signals at different degrees of overweight yarn and also for yarn of more than 50% underweight. Faults in yarn diameter of +50% or more classified for length by timing circuits B, C, D, E and F. A pulse at the start of the fault is fed to circuit B to open the associated gate for a preset-time. At the end of this period the gate is closed and a pulse passed to circuit C to open its gate for a preset time and so on for the other timing circuits. A trailing edge pulse for the fault passed through which ever gate is open to be registered on a corresponding counter 25. The outputs of threshold circuits 19, 22 may be monitored on a cathode-ray tube 18 or aural warning system 23.
