Abstract

1,011,642. Dry cleaning apparatus. ENGELHARD HANOVIA Inc. Dec. 4, 1963 [Dec. 6, 1962; Aug. 12, 1963], No. 47985/63. Heading D1A. [Also in Division F4] A dry cleaning machine has a solvent storage tank 21 divided into a cold compartment 22 having refrigerating means 27, 28 and a vent 26 and a warm compartment 23, solvent being fed from compartment 23 to the cleaning drum 1 by a pipe 45 and valve 38, and being extracted from drum 1 by a pump 29 through pipe 47 when in liquid form and pipe 46 when in vapour form. When vapour is extracted it is mixed with cold liquid which comes from compartment 22 of tank 21 via pipe 48 and thus the vapour is condensed in the pump 29. Air and solvent are separated in a separator 30 and air is passed to the cold compartment 22 and solvent to the warm compartment 23. Within the drum 1 is a rotary perforate basket 2 on which is mounted a heater 3 controlled by a thermostat 4. Each time the thermostat reaches its maximum temperature and switches off the heater it brings into effect a mechanism which if the clothes are dry switches off the machine and if the clothes are wet switches the heater on again. This mechanism comprises a lever 15 operated by a solenoid 14 which brings a disc 16 into contact with a driving wheel 12 so that it is rotated thereby. If the clothes are dry the drum 1 cools down slowly and the disc is rotated until an arm 18 thereon operates a switch 20 to switch off the machine. If the clothes are wet the drum cools quickly and the thermostat de-energizes the solenoid 14 operating the lever 15 and hence stops the disc 16 before the switch 20 is operated.
