Abstract

Compounds of the formula <FORM:1011552/C2/1> where R1 and R3 are -CN or -COOR, R being C1- 4 alkyl; R2 and R4 are hydrogen or alkyl or cyclo-alkyl of up to 6 carbon atoms; and m is 1-5, are prepared by reacting CH2=CR3R4 with R1R2CHHal or R1R2CH(CH2)mHal respectively, at 20-100 DEG C. in the presence of an alkali or alkaline earth metal amalgam. A polymerization inhibitor for the vinyl compound is preferably present. With suitable reactants acetic esters or acrylonitrile are obtained as by-products. Examples prepare adipodinitrile (together with propionitrile), d -cyanovaleric acid methyl ester (together with dimethyl adipate), a -methyl-adipodinitrile, a ,a 1-dimethyl-adipodinitrile and methyl g -cyanovinylacetate (together with methyl acetate).
