Abstract
1,011,193. Storing and re-vaporizing gases. WALTER KIDDE CO. Inc. (Walter Kidde & Co. Inc.), Oct. 23, 1963, No. 41782/63. Heading F4P. [Also in Division F1] An apparatus for producing a pressurized mixture of gases comprises a container holding a pressurized refrigerant and having an outlet at one part thereof, a closure for sealing the outlet and arranged to rupture in response to a predetermined pressure within the container, a source of hot combustion gases at an opposed part of the container including a nozzle having an outlet bore facing the closure, and a plug slidably mounted in the bore having a lower end for engaging the closure to retain the plug in the bore and close the same until the closure is ruptured. A gas generator 10 for producing a pressurized mixture of gases to inflate an inflatable device comprises a spherical container 11 holding pressurized liquid carbon dioxide refrigerant with the possible addition of alcohol. An outlet assembly 12 including a frangible disc 17 is mounted at the bottom of container 11 and a chamber 18, containing a combustible charge 19 with an ignition squib 20 is mounted opposite outlet assembly 12. Upon ignition hot combustion gases flow from chamber 18 to rupture a frangible disc 29 before entering a nozzle member 21 having a throat 37. At this stage, a bore 41 in a tubular member 32 at the end of nozzle 21 is sealed by a plug 42 engaging frangible disc 17 so that the combustion gases flow through ports 38 at the nozzle throat 37 to vaporize and mix with the carbon dioxide and alcohol. When the pressure has built up sufficiently, disc 17 ruptures to release plug 42 and allow the combustion gases to discharge through bore 41, and the mixed gases to discharge through an annular gap 34 between a sleeve 22 and tubular member 32. The combustion gases flowing through nozzle 21 then entrain carbon dioxide flowing to the throat through ports 38. Either or both the bores 30 and 41 may be eccentrically disposed in relation to sleeve 22 and tubular member 32, respectively, so that by rotating the tubular member 32 or sleeve 22 about its axis the dimensions of the annular gap 34 can be made uniform. Container 11 may be cylindrical with hemispherical ends.
