Abstract

1,010,292. Template followers. G. RICHARDS & CO Ltd. March 1, 1962 [March 2, 1961], No. 7710/61. Heading G3N. A stylus is automatically steered along a groove, the course of which represents an outline to be cut by a machine tool, and the X and Y coordinates of the stylus movements are recorded on a magnetic tape as a pair of frequency modulated signals. The tape subsequently controls the machine tool. The stylus is dependent from a carriage 14 which is driven along the groove 11 by a pair of wheels Fig. 3 (not shown) which straddle the groove and are rotated by a motor 25. The carriage 14 is connected by a rotatable vertical shaft to an upper carriage 15 which is mounted on slides 17, 21 and which, controls two electrical position signal generators 22. When the stylus contacts a wall of the groove it is deflected and closes a contact which via a transistor amplifier, Fig. 5, (not shown) energizes a stepping motor to rotate the vertical shaft and so steer the carriage 14 to follow the groove. The stylus may be off-set to compensate for cutter radius.
