Abstract
Raney type metals, e.g. cobalt, iron and nickel, e.g. in powder form, are freed from absorbed hydrogen retained in forming the Raney structure or powdered metal, by placing the metal in contact with an inert anode immersed in an electrolyte and passing a current through it e.g. 10-500 milliA. per sq. cm., preferably at constant voltage, e.g. 2V. In examples, powdered nickel Raney metal is loaded on a horizontal platinum plate anode immersed in NaOH or Na2SO4 solution, and 2V. power applied until the current falls to 10-20% of its original steady value. The process eliminates the pyrophoric character of the original powdered metal containing absorbed hydrogen, without impairing catalytic properties. Specification 803,844 is referred to.
