Abstract
Vanadium-containing titanium tetrachloride is purified by (a) preparing a mixture of the crude compound with at least 1.8 parts by weight TiCl3 and 0.2 to 3 parts by weight white mineral oil for each part of VOCl3 contained in the TiCl4, (b) agitating and heating the mixture at above 120 DEG C. for at least 5 minutes and (c) distilling the purified TiCl4. Suitably, the mixture is prepared by chlorinating a titanium ore in the presence of excess reducing agent, e.g. carbon, or a deficiency of chlorinating agent, so that the TiCl4 produced contains at least 0.5% TiCl3, and adding white mineral oil to the reaction mixture without purification. The purified TiCl4 contains no more than 0.01% by weight of VOCl3.
