Abstract

1,009,585. Wire coating apparatus. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE A. G. March 25, 1964, No. 12743/64. Heading D1L. Apparatus for applying colouring marks in the form of bands for identification purposes to an elongated article such as an insulated electrical conductor comprises two rotors 5, 6 each carrying at least a pair of juxtaposed nozzles 13, 14, and preferably a series of such pairs of nozzles disposed around the rotors. Liquid colouring material is supplied via pipes 11, 12 and shafts 7, 8 upon which the rotors are mounted to the nozzles 13, 14 emerging therefrom as jets which form a series of longitudinally spaced pairs of half rings of colour marking on a travelling insulated conductor wire 4. Rotors 5, 6 are driven synchronously and in addition the rotor 6 is mounted so as to be angularly adjustable in position in order that the pairs of half-rings formed on the conductor 4 by the jets from the rotor should coincide with and be completed into rings by the jets from the rotor 5. Annular members 19, 21, 22 which surround the rotor 5 and support a masking member 31 for the conductor 4 are mounted for longitudinal adjustment in position so that either (a) both jets are prevented from falling on the conductor and pass into a chamber 36 defined by the annular members 19, 21 or (b) the jet from nozzles 14 only may reach the conductor, such liquid passing to the right of the sharp edge 35 of member 19 or (c) both jets may pass to the right of the edge 35 and may impinge upon the conductor 4. Liquid which does not contact the conductor 4 but passes to the right of the sharp edge as in cases (b) and (c) passes into a chamber 37 defined by annular members 19, 22. Annular members 20, 23, 24 similarly surround the rotor 6. The annular and masking members referred to are all supported on a tube 25, through which the conductor passes a hand wheel 26 being provided for adjustment of the position of the tube 25 by means of a gear 28 and rack, not shown, formed on the tube 25. The drive arrangements for the rotors, described in detail in Specification 1, 009, 548 allow for the adjustment of the speed of the rotors into the desired ratio with respect to the forwarding speed of the conductor. Also described therein are a stroboscope device which provides a visual check as to whether the two sets of half-rings or marking material coincide, and the circulation system for the liquid colouring material.
