Abstract

1,009,584. Apparatus for coating wires. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE A. G. March 25, 1964, No. 12742/64. Heading D1L. Apparatus for applying colouring bands for identification purposes to an elongated article such as an insulated conductor comprises two rotors 6, 7 each carrying at least one nozzle 63, 64 to which liquid colouring material may be supplied to emerge as jets which form a series of longitudinally-spaced half-rings on a travelling insulated conductor 1, the rotor 6 being mounted so as to be angularly adjustable in position in order to arrange the half-rings formed on the conductor by the jet from that rotor should coincide with and be completed into rings by the jets from the rotor 7 and a stroboscopic device being provided which forms an image of the applied marks in a viewing mirror. In addition one of the rotors may be mounted so as to be longitudinally adjustable on its driving shaft. Liquid colouring material is supplied by a pump via pipes 23 and rotary connections to the hollow shafts 8, 9 upon which the rotors are mounted. Shafts 8 and 9 rotate synchronously and are driven by a common drive chain not shown through sprockets 41, 42. The drive to the shafts 8, 9 is taken from a variable speed motor, which also drives a haul pulley forwarding the conductor, and includes gear means and electrical means for varying the speed of the shafts 8, 9, so that the ratio of the speeds of the shafts 8, 9 to the forwarding speed of the conductor may be varied to the desired value to provide suitable spacing of the markings. Annular shroud members surround the rotors to catch the jets of liquid which do not impinge upon the conductor. These may carry masking members for the conductor and may be adjustable in position as described in Specification 1,009, 585. The liquid colouring material not deposited upon the conductor is recirculated (Fig. 1, not shown). An electro-magnetic generator comprising a toothed rotor 43 is mounted on a hollow shaft 30 keyed to shaft 9, and amplified pulses so derived light a lamp to illuminate the conductor markings and produce a stationary image in a viewing mirror.
