Abstract

A web coating apparatus comprises an engraved roller 11, Fig 1 (not shown), extending into a bath 12 of coating material, and a doctor blade 13 removing excess coating material from the surface of the roller, means being provided for varying the relative speed between the surface of the roller and the web. The variable speed means includes a motor M driving the roller through a variable gear V.G. and included in the drive maybe integrating means I arranged to vary the speed of rotation of the coating roller in correspondence with a charge in web speed, Fig. 2 (not shown).
