Abstract

A bottom-blast tuyere box 1, having a hollow ring 7 adjacent its inner periphery in the dead zone beyond the outermost ring of tuyeres 5 and an inwardly-convex bottom cover, is provided with a horizontal partition 10 supporting a blast guide 13 which is sickle-shaped in plan and of increasing width in the direction of flow. The guide is formed by a steeplysloping inner side flange 14 abutting the partition at 17 and less steely-sloping top flange 15 abutting an extension 16 of the ring inner wall. The ring is provided with baffles 8 and 9 to tangentially deflect the flow from the blast inlets 2 and 3 respectively, which are themselves peripherally spaced by 74 degrees and connected at their bases to the partition by sloping deflector plates 11<SP>1</SP>. A vertical boundary wall (not shown) is preferably provided between the wide end of the sickle-shaped guide and the partition. The guide is sealed from the peripheral space beyond and below the outmost ring of tuyeres, as illustrated by Fig. 2 (not shown), by plates, initially projecting above the datum level of the converter bottom, which are frictionally held between the extension 16 and damping strips such that said plates are pressed down by the converter bottom on installation of the box.
