Abstract
1,010,403. Gas/liquid contact column. SOC. POUR L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES AB-DER-HALDEN. May 19, 1964 [May 31, 1963], No. 20575/64. Heading B1R. A gas/liquid contact column comprises a number of superimposed annular trays each made up of truncated sector-shape elements each of which has a lower liquid collecting trough 11 with a liquid outlet 12 and flanked by two bubble troughs 16 divided internally by partitions 18 apertured at 19 and curved over at their upper ends to make contact with the edge of an adjacent partition thereby to seal the space between adjacent elements and constrain a rising gas to pass through liquid in the bubble troughs, and an upper liquid distributing tray 25 receiving liquid from a downcomer 33 and distributing it through apertures 29 and over curved side walls 27 into the bubble troughs below. The inner periphery of a tray is supported by a number of vertical piers extending through the column, closure plates for the central open area being provided at each tray level. The closure plates may act as relief valves in the event of an undue increase in pressure within the column. The liquid outlets 12 are connected to downcomers 13 which discharge into annular troughs below each tray, a pipe extending downwardly from each such trough fitting inside a downcomer 33. In a modification the tray and its elements are rectangular.
