Abstract

1,009,095. Valves. KOPPERS CO. Inc. Oct. 5, 1964 [Nov. 6, 1963], No. 40590/64. Heading F2V. A valve suitable for controlling the flow of high temperature gases comprises a hollow annular seat member 7 and a hollow doublemushroom-shaped closure disc 17, both of which are adapted to be cooled in such a way that the greatest cooling effect occurs at the areas where the disc contacts the seat. In the case of the disc this is achieved by means of a lenticular shaped insert 31 of greater radius than the disc, thereby defining a passage which narrows progressively in the direction of the periphery of the disc to increase the velocity of the medium in this region, the medium being supplied through a tube 21 and removed through the annular space between tube 21 and a further tube 19, which latter tube may also serve as an operating spindle. The seat is provided with a ring-shaped insert 35 defining a chamber 41 to which cooling medium is supplied by pipes such as 39 and a chamber 45 from which the medium flows to pipes such as 43, the chambers communicating with each other via a narrow annular space 47 adjacent the area where the disc contacts the seat, thereby causing a high velocity in this region to increase the cooling effect.
