Abstract
1,008,740. Refrigerating. MINISTER OF AVIATION and THE DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT CO. Ltd. Jan. 22, 1960 [Feb. 20, 1959], No. 5860/59. Heading F4H. A refrigeration unit for cooling for a limited period of time a semi-conductor detector of infra-red radiations comprises a cylindrical container 22 divided into two compartments 26, 27 by a diaphragm 25 and having a transfer tube 28 extending through the diaphragm. The tube 28 is open at its lower end in the compartment 27 and has its upper end secured to the top 23 of the container, a slot 29 in the tube permitting communication between the tube and the compartment 26. An exhaust tube 30 extends from the compartment 26 and leads to the exterior of an outer casing 10, the compartment being filled with a liquid-restrictive packing 38 of silica or glass wool. The detector (not shown) is mounted in thermal contact with the top 23 adjacent a transparent closure 14. To prepare for use the compartments 26, 27 are filled with liquid refrigerant (e.g. " Freon ", Registered Trade Mark), through an inlet pipe (Figs. 1, 2, 4, not shown) communicating with the compartment 27 and when the liquid emerges from the tube 30 the latter is sealed by a glass bulb (not shown), and the inlet pipe is then sealed. In use the bulb is broken and the refrigerant boils, the vapour escaping through the tube 30 and the top 23 is cooled for a limited time determined by the time taken for all the liquid to boil away. The packing 38 reduces the tendency for liquid refrigerant to be blown out of the tube 30. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown) the tubes 28, 30 are in thermal contact with each other and both compartments 27, 28 are filled with packing. The space between the casing 10 and container 22 may be evacuated to thermally isolate the refrigeration unit.
