Abstract

1360060 Thermally insulated containers AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc 16 Aug 1971 [16 Dec 1970] 38299/71 Headings F4U and F4H A dewar comprises an inner tank 12 for receiving and storing for transportation a cryogenic fluid e.g. liquid helium, which is supported on trunnions 48, 50 of a low thermally conductive material in spaced relationship from an outer shell 14, the space therebetween being evacuated. A first radiation shield 54 of self-supporting form is mounted between the tank and shell, a second shield 56 between the shield 54 and shell and a conduit 96 vents the tank to atmosphere on filling of the dewar, the conduit contacting a major portion of the surface of the shield 54 for pre-cooling purposes which shield thereafter acts as a large heat sink and a wall 66 forms with a portion of the shield 56 a second storage tank for a second volume of cryogenic fluid, e.g. liquid nitrogen, for thermal insulation purposes.
