Abstract

A catalyst capable of polymerizing butadiene to a polymer having a 1,4-cis structure, comprises reacting an organo-metallic compound of Al containing at least one atom of iodine, by anionic exchange with an inorganic tetravalent Ti compound which contains no iodine, to form at least one direct Ti-I bond, and concurrently or successively effecting a reduction reaction with a trialkyl aluminium or dialkyl aluminium hydride to reduce the valency, of at least part of the titanium, to three. The inorganic Ti compound may be TiCl4, TiBr4, or TiF4. Examples of catalyst systems are Al(C2H5)3 + Al(C2H5)2I + Ti Cl4 and Al(C2H5)2H + Al(C2H5)I + TiCl4. The polymerization of butadiene is effected using conventional "low-pressure" techniques.
