Alpha olefins are polymerized using a catalyst which is prepared by calcining a halide of a trivalent metal with a halohydrate, sulphide hydrate, sulphate hydrate oxysulphate hydrate, hydroxide or hydroxide hydrate of a metal of Groups 1-8 of the Mendeleev Periodic Table, so as to form active groups on the surface of the calcined product, further reacting this with a compound of a transition metal, and then combining this mixture with an organo aluminium compound. In the examples, aluminium trichloride is calcined with magnesium hydroxide, sodium sulphite hydrate, magnesium chloride hydrate, aluminium hydroxide, manganous chloride hydrate, vanadium oxysulphate hydrate, stannous chloride hydrate, chromium hydroxide, nickel chloride hydrate, or ferric chloride, the product then being further reacted with either titanium tetrachloride or vanadium oxytrichloride. This product is then combined with aluminium triethyl, -diethylchloride, or - ethyldichloride and this catalyst system is used to polymerize ethylene, propylene, butylene or an ethylene propylene block copolymer. The polymerization may be carried out in the presence of hydrogen. Certain additives, to prevent agglomeration of the polymer, may be added to the reactants, and exemplified additives are titanium tetrabutoxide, tetraethoxy silane and silicone oil.
