Abstract
1,251,177. Polymerizing alkenes. STAMICARBON N.V. 3 June, 1970 [3 June, 1969; 14 Nov., 1969], No. 26844/70. Heading C3P. Alkene polymers are prepared by polymerizing one or more alkenes in a solvent at a temperature above 110‹ C. with the aid of a catalyst obtained by mixing a titanium halide, an aluminium compound of the general formula AlR 3-m X m where R is a C 1-30 hydrocarbon, X is halogen and m is 1-3, and an organomagnesium compound, the molar ratio of the magnesium compound to the aluminium compound being (m - A)/B where mis the number of halogen atoms per aluminium atom in the aluminium compound, A is - 0.75 to + 0.97 and B is 2.2 to 2.7, the molar ratio of the aluminium compound to the titanium compound being 8-2000. In the examples: polyethylene is prepared using TiCl 4 /(C 4 H q ) 2 Mg/Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl, Al[i-C 4 -H q ) 2 Cl, Al(C 2 H 5 ) 1 . 5 Cl 1 . 5 or AlCl 3 , TiCl 4 /- (phenyl) 2 Mg/Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl; or TiBr 4 /didodecyl Mg/Al(C 2 H 5 ) 1 . 5 Cl 1 . 5 ; and ethylene is copolymerized with propylene or butylene using TiCl 4 /- (C 4 H q ) 2 Mg/Al(C 2 H 5 ) 1.5 Cl 1.5
