1297309 Polymerizing alpha olefins ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 16 March 1970 [7 May 1969] 12500/70 Heading C3P Copolymers of ethylene and a C 3-10 alpha olefin are produced using a catalyst system comprising an alkyl aluminium and the reaction product of a vanadium compound with an aluminium alkoxy compound in which the alkyl aluminium compound has the formula RmAlX n , wherein R is C 1-12 monovalent hydrocarbyl, X is a halogen having an atomic number above 17 or C 1-12 monovalent hydrocarbyl, m is 1-3 and m + n = 3, and in which the vanadium compound is selected from vanadium oxytrihalides and tetrahalides and the aluminium alkoxy compound has the general formula Al(OR) 3 , where R is C 1-12 monovalent hydrocarbyl. In the examples: (1) a copolymer of ethylene and propylene is prepared in heptane using the reaction product of VOCl 3 with Al(O iso C 3 H 7 ) 3 or Al(O sec C 4 H 9 ) 3 , and Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl as cocatalyst; (2) a copolymer of ethylene and propylene is prepared in heptane using the reaction product of VOCl 3 with Al(O iso C 3 H 7 ) 3 and Al(i Bu) 3 or Al 2 (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Cl 3 as cocatalyst; (3) a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and 5-ethylidenenorbornene is prepared in heptane using the reaction product of VOCl 3 with Al(O i Pr) 3 and Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl as cocatalyst.
