Abstract

1,127,096. Polymerization catalyst for olefins. MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 15 June, 1967 [27 June, 1966], No. 27738/67. Heading C3P. Ethylene polymers are made by polymerizing ethylene alone, or in admixture with an alphaolefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising (A) an alkyl aluminium dichloride, (B) an alkylalkoxyaluminium chloride, and (C) a tetravalent Ti compound of the formula where OR<SP>111</SP> represents a C 1 to C 10 alkoxy group and n an integer of 0-4. The polymerization is preferably carried out in a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon diluent or solvent. The catalyst may be ball-milled, and hydrogen and also some preformed polyethylene may be present during the polymerization. The polymers are recovered by conventional techniques. Specified alpha-olefins are propylene and butene- 1, and copolymers of these olefins with ethylene are exemplified.
