Abstract

1388583 Olefin polymerization catalysts SOLVAY & CIE 19 July 1972 [21 July 1971] 33749/72 Addition to 1140649 Heading C3P A catalyst component for the polymerization of olefins comprises the product of reacting a halogen containing compound of a transition metal of Group IVa, Va or VIa of the Mendeleef Periodic Table with a solid support which is an oxygen-containing organic chelate compound of a bivalent metal which is substantially free of hydroxyl groups attached to the bivalent metal and which contains at least one sequence of metal-oxygen-carbon bonds and has at least one co-ordination bond whereby a heterocyclic structure is formed in which the bivalent metal atom is included. The bivalent metal may be Mg, Ca, Zn, Mn, Sn, Fe, Ni or Co. The catalyst component is activated with an organo-metallic compound when used to polymerize olefins. Titanium or vanadium alkoxides, diethyl zinc, diethyl cadmium or CO 2 may be added to the polymerization medium. In the examples ethylene is continuously polymerized in hexane in the presence of hydrogen using as a catalyst triisobutylaluminium and the reaction product of TiCl 4 with magnesium acetylacetonate or magnesium 8-hydroxyquinolinate.
