Abstract

1,140,687. Polymerizing dienes. MICHELIN & CIE (Compagnie Generale Des Etabs. Michelin). 3 Feb., 1966 [4 Feb., 1965], No. 4872/66. Heading C3P. Polymers of conjugated dienes, e.g. butadiene, are made by effecting polymerization of the monomers in solution, in the presence of a catalyst system comprising (a) an organometallic iodide; (b) a tetravalent titanium compound, and (c) an organometallic compound different from (a) and of the general formula R n M or R n-1 XM, where M represents Al, Mg, or Li of valency n, R is an organic group, and X represents halogen or hydrogen. The relative proportions of (a), (b) and (c) being maintained during polymerization such that there is no substantial molar excess of component (c) over the sum of the molar amounts of components (a) and (b), and when M represents an A1 atom, the molecular ratio of the organometallic iodide to Ti is greater than 2 and the molecular ratio of R n M or R n-1 XM to Ti is from 2.5 to 4.5, when M represents lithium, the component c is R n M, the molecular ratio of iodide to Ti is greater than 2, and the molecular ratio of R n M to Ti is from 1 to 4, and when M represents Mg, the molecular ratio of iodide to Ti is greater than 3, and the molecular ratio of R n M or R n-1 XM to Ti is from 0.5 to 4. The tetravalent Ti compound, e.g. TiCl 4 , and the organometallic compound may be present as a reaction product. Compound (a) may be aluminium diethyl or diisobutyl iodide and it may be prepared in situ. The polymers have a high cis-1,4 content.
