Abstract

A polymerization catalyst for 1,3-butadiene, comprises (1) an organometallic compound selected from compounds of the formula RnM and compounds of the formula R2AlH wherein R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical, M is Mg or Al, and n is an interer equal to the valence of M, (b) a titanium halide of the formula TiXy where X is Cl or Br, and y is an integer of 2, 3 or 4, and (c) 1,4-diiodo-2-butene. The catalyst is preferably formed in a hydrocarbon diluent, and butadiene may be reacted with iodine to form 1,4-diiodo-2-butene. The catalyst and 1,4-diiodo-2-butene are preferably formed in situ, although the catalyst can be preformed in a separate vessel. The polymerization of butadiene is effected by conventional "low-pressure" methods as is also the recovery of the polymer, e.g. addition of alcohol and antioxidant such as 2,21-methylenebis - (4 - methyl - 6 - tert - butylphenol). The Specification contains a very extensive list of catalyst components. Exemplified catalysts are (1) triisobutylaluminium, TiCl4, 1,4-diiodo-2-butene; (2) diethylmagnesium, TiBr4, 1,4-diiodo-2-butene; (3) diisobutyl aluminium hydride, TiCl3, 1,4 - diiodo - 2 - butene; (4) di - n - octylmagnesium, TiCl2, 1,4 - diiodo-2-butene; and (5) triphenylaluminium, TiCl4, and 1,4-diiodo-2-butene. The polymers have a very high cis 1,4-structure.
