Abstract

1407569 Tri-component Ziegler catalyst ASAHI KASEI KOGYO KK 1 June 1973 [8 June 1972 (2)] 26223/73 Heading C3P [Also in Division C2] Ethylene is homo- or copolymerized in the presence of as catalyst (A) a hydrocarboninsoluble reaction product of (i) an organoaluminium compound of the formula R a Al(OR) 3-a , where R is a hydrocarbon group and a is 2À20 to 2À85, with (ii) a titanium compound containing at least three halide groups, at a temperature up to 50‹ C., (B) (iii) an organo-aluminium compound of the formula R b Al(OR) 3-b where b is 2À02 to 2À20, or (iv) a compound of the formula AlR c (OR) d X 3-(c+d) where X is halogen, c is 1À0 to 2À0 and d is 0À1 to 0À9, and (C) a titanium compound of formula (RO) e TiCl 4-e where e is 1À0-2À0. Components A (i) and B (iii) can be obtained by reacting the corresponding trihydrocarbyl- and trihydrocarbyloxy-aluminium compounds, while component B (iv) may be obtained by reaction of the corresponding dihydrocarbyl aluminium hydrocarbyloxide and hydrocarbyl aluminium mono-, di- or sesquihalides. In typical examples polyethylene or ethylene-propylene copolymer are obtained using heptane reaction medium and hydrogen gas, and catalysts of (A) (C 2 H 5 ) 2À40 Al(OC 2 H 5 ) 0À60 - TiCl 4 (C 2 H 5 ) 2À80 Al(OC 2 H 5 ) 0À20 - TiCl 4 (C 2 H 5 ) 2À80 Al(OC 2 H 5 ) 0À20 - TiCl 3À5 - (OC 4 - H 9 ) 0À5 , (i-C 4 H 9 ) 2À4 Al(OC 2 H 5 ) 0À6 - TiCl 4 or (CH 3 ) 1À0 (C 2 H 5 ) 1À55 Al(O-n-C 4 H 9 ) 0À45 - Ti(O-n- C 4 H 9 ) 0À5 Cl 3À5 , (B) Al(C 2 H 5 ) 2À20 (OC 2 H 5 ) 0À80 or (n - C 6 H 3 ) 2 Al(OC 2 H 5 ) 0À67 Cl 0À33 , and (C) T : (OC 4 H 9 )Cl 3 , Ti(OC 4 H 9 ) 1À5 Cl 2À5 , Ti(OC 8 H 17 )Cl 3 or Ti(OC 2 H 5 ) 2 Cl 2 , or, in control procedures, TiCl 4 or Ti(OC 4 H 9 ) 4 .
