Abstract

A friction roller for driving a yarn body or bobbin in bobbin winding machines comprises cylinder 2, 3 that compress a sleeve 6 therebetween to convex form. The sleeve 6 is formed from a body 7 made from porous flexible material such as plastic foam containing a permanently magnetic substance in powder form. The magnetic substance ensures good contact pressure between the drum and the yarn take-up bobbin 1 at the beginning of the yarn take-up provided the take-up bobbin is made of steel or is fitted on a steel core. On the outer face of the body 7 is a harder skin 8 having a high coefficient of friction and on the inner face of the body 7 is a sleeve 9 of solid, but flexible, material such as hard rubber. The cylinders 2, 3 may be formed with circumferential grooves and such grooves may be in the form of a screw thread.
