A textile pirn has a protective sheath or sleeve of synthetic plastics material around its stem and removable caps of similar material at the ends. The cap at the smaller end holds the sheath in place while the other cap cooperates with the drive means on the winding machine. The pirn ends are reduced in size to accommodate the caps of which various examples are illustrated, and which are secured to the pirn by screws, weak adhesive, cross-pins, or by being internally screw-threaded or by having internal ribs.
