Abstract

1,008,004. Developing electrostatic images. RANK-XEROX Ltd. April 16,1962 [April 17, 1961], No. 14613/62. Heading G2H. An apparatus for developing electrostatic latent images comprises means to support a xerographic plate 18 and two reservoirs 24, 25 for containing a liquid carrier of high resistivity for electroscopic developer material, the liquid in reservoir 25 having a high concentration of developer material, the liquid in reservoir 24 having a lower concentration. The plate 18 is seated in a recess of support member 19 and is covered with a hinged cover plate 16. An electrically biased electrode (not shown) may be positioned opposite the recess. Valves 26, 27 selectively isolate reservoirs 24, 25 or may be adjusted by a regulating device to maintain a desired concentration in the liquid circulated by pump 11. An electrostatic separator 40 has electrode plates 41, 42 having opposite polarities. Outlets 44, 45 pass liquid of low concentration and high concentration to the reserviors 24, 25 respectively. An exposed plate 18 is developed by opening valve 27 and causing pump 11 to circulate developer under manual or automatic control of pump 11. After scanning or otherwise utilizing the developed image the plate is returned to support member 19 for cleaning by brush 51 moved back and forth across plate 18 simultaneously with the flow of clear developer liquid. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown) an endless flexible plate 63 having a photoconductive backing is continuously advanced past a corona device 64 and a cathode ray tube 66. The plate is developed in a reservoir 70 and the developed image is projected on to a screen 85 the plate being cleaned by brushes 88 in a second reservoir 87. In another embodiment Fig. 3 (not shown), the developed image is transferred to a receiving web 101 instead of being projected, Fig. 2 (not shown). The web 101 Fig. 3 (not shown) may be cut into lengths or wound into a roll.
