Abstract
1,214,149. Electrostatic copier. CANON CAMERA CO. Inc. Dec.20, 1967 [Dec.24, 1966] No.57930/67. Heading G2H. In an electrostatic copying process, an image is formed on an insulating layer above a photoconductive layer on a photo-sensitive plate, liquid developer containing a toner is applied to the plate, and the developed image transferred by line contacting a sheet of copying material whilst applying a voltage between the copy material and the plate, and the toner is then fixed on the copy material. As shown in Fig.1, a photo-sensitive drum 2 is charged by a D. C. corona device 3, and exposed, at an opposite polarity or A. C. corona device 4, to an image of an original O moving synchronously with the drum, the image being illuminated by a tungsten lamp 5 for increased contrast and being developed at 6 and transferred at 7 to copy paper P, a voltage of polarity depending on the conductivity of the photo-sensitive layer being applied, from source 15 via change over switch 17, between the drum 2 and transfer roller 16. The image is fixed by device 32, and drum cleaned by brushes 8 and dried by blower 9. The drum 2 consists, Fig.2 (not shown) of a plastics insulating layer (2a) on a photo-conductive layer (2b) on a conducting base (2c) and liquid developer (19) is applied to the insulating layer (2a) by a roller (21) a bias voltage being applied between roller (21) and drum (2). Alternatively, developer (19) is applied, Fig.3 (not shown) by a sponge or felt layer (24) on a conductive roller (23), or, Fig.4 (not shown) a block (26) of porous material is dipped in the developer, and its upper surface is placed against the drum (2), or developer may be sprayed on to the drum by a siphon (27), Fig. 5 (not shown). In a second embodiment of the image transfer process, Fig.10 (not shown) guide roller (16) is driven by a roller (33) through a conductive belt (34) and a roller (35) pushes copy material (P) at the same speed as the drum (2). The photo-sensitive plate may be a belt or a plane plate.
