Abstract

A method of sizing paper comprises preparing an aqueous solution of a sizing agent by dispersing electrically neutral particles of a sizing agent in an aqueous medium by means of a cationic dispersion agent to import a positive charge to the particles and introducing the dispersion into a stream of paper pulp at such a position that the pulp is not subjected to further mechanical treatment before it emerges on the wire of the paper machine to form a sheet. Suitable sizing agents are petroleum wax, synthetic wax, resin, plastics and petroleum resins and suitable dispersion agents are salts of primary amines of which the lipoid part (alkyl chain) contains 10-40 carbon atoms; heptadecylamine acetate may also be used. The dispersion is preferably added continuously by a dosing pump feeding into the pulp conduit leading into the inlet bore of the paper machine. Dyes, insecticides, ultraviolet filters or disinfectants may by added to the dispersion. An example is given in which paper is sized with a cationic wax dispersion and heptadecylamine acetate is used as dispersion agent.
