An absorbent for treating oil on the surface of water is prepared by impregnating disintegrated cellulosic or synthetic polymeric material with an aqueous emulsion of oil or fat using as an emulsifier an amine or ammonium salt of a carboxylic acid which is destroyed by heating the carrier after impregnation.
