Abstract

Disintegrable detergent tablets are made by forming a concentrated solution of slurry of a solid organic surface active agent (e.g. sodium dodecyl or tridecyl benzene sulphonate) in water, adding NaCl to the solution or slurry, removing water, mixing the resulting dry material with an alkaline carbonate (e.g. sodium carbonate, bi- or sesqui-carbonate) and a solid hydrogen ion-producing material having an anion compatible with the detersive function of the composition (e.g. NaH2PO4, NaHSO4 or boric acid), and compressing the mixture in a die to form tablets. The compositions may also contain sodium tripolyphosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, trisodium phosphate, sodium sulphate, sodium metasilicate, sodium or magnesium stearate (which is used as a coating agent for sodium metasilicate), corn starch, talc, sawdust, wood flour, silica gel, sodium perborate, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, dyes and perfumes.
