Abstract
Abrasion and crack-resistant, but readily disintegrable detergent briquettes are prepared by spraying an agitated dry particulate mixture containing an anionic organic synthetic detergent and anhydrous granular sodium tripolyphosphate with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate, and then compressing the mixture. The detergent, which suitably comprises 5-35%, preferably 10-20%, by weight of the briquette, may be an N-fatty acyl derivative of taurine or N-methyl taurine, or an alkyl polyglycol ether sulphate, but is most desirably a C10- 20-alkyl sulphate or a C9- 15-alkyl benzene sulphonate; in all cases the cation is preferably sodium. The tripolyphosphate preferably comprises 40-70% by weight of the briquette, and the silicate solution, preferably a 40-55% solution of sodium silicate solids having a molar ratio M2O:SiO2 of 1:1 to 1:2.5, preferably about 1:1.6, is applied in such amount as to yield 5-15% silicate solids in the final briquette. If the main detergent to be used is an alkyl sulphate, the ingredients are preferably sprayed with such an amount of a 5-20% solution of sodium C9- 15-alkyl benzene sulphonate as will yield 5-15% of the alkyl-benzene sulphonate in the sprayed mixture, before the mixture is sprayed with the silicate solution. The mixture to be treated and compressed may also contain sodium sulphate, pyrophosphate, carbonate, perborate and carboxymethylcellulose, fatty acid amides and alkanolamide, talc, optical bleach, blue pigment, and anti-tarnish agent, and the silicate solution to be sprayed on to the mixture may contain ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid. The sprayed mixture is suitably compressed at 50-250 p.s.i. and may then be lightly sprayed with perfume, and with water to improve the surface appearance.
