Abstract

A racemate or mixture of enantiomorph of a basic amino acid (e.g. lysine, arginine or ornithine) is resolved or partially resolved by adsorbing the amino acid on an optically-active cation exchanger which has been produced by amide formation between a weakly acidic cation exchanger in the acid form and an optically active amino-dicarboxylic acid (e.g. L-glutamic acid or L-asparaginic acid), and then selectively eluting one enantiomorph with a basic eluent, e.g. an aqueous or an aqueous alcoholic solution of ammonia or an aliphatic amine of up to 4 carbon atoms. The process may be repeated, and any unwanted enantiomorph may be recemized and the racemate again treated as above.
