Abstract

The invention comprises a process for the resolution of racemic tropic acid by reacting an optically active form of threo-1-(p-nitrophenyl)-2-amino-1:3 propanediol with the tropic acid and separating the resulting diastereoisomeric salts, by difference in solubility thereof, e.g. by treating with a base such as ammonia, and then with an acid such as hydrochloric acid. The compounds D(-) -threo-1-(p nitrophenyl)-2-amino-1:3 propanediol-L(-)-tropate and the corresponding L(+) dextrotatory isomer are described and claimed.
