Abstract
1,006,988. Hot water supply systems. A. STAINTHORPE. June 3, 1964, No. 22932/64. Heading F4A. In a method of recovering heat in waste water discharged from hot water-using domestic appliances, the waste water is led to a reservoir provided with an extended heat exchange surface, air warmed in contact with the surface being utilized in a heat pump to produce higher grade heat which is used to heat water for domestic use. As shown in the Figure, hot waste water from bathroom and kitchen appliances flows through a common drainpipe to a reservoir 2 located at the lower part of a compartment in which is disposed a heat pump. The reservoir is of copper and is covered by a lid provided with copper fins to dissipate the heat from water in the reservoir into the compartment atmosphere. The heat pump through which the air circulates converts the heat to heat of a higher grade to heat water circulating to a storage tank disposed in the bathroom. A two-way valve 1 in the common drainpipe is thermostatically controlled to admit water to the reservoir when the compartment air temperature falls below 2‹ C. and to divert the water to waste when the temperature exceeds 2‹ C. A reservoir drain valve 3 opens to run off the water in the reservoir when its temperature falls below 1‹ C.
