Abstract

A process for the production of a foamed thermoplastic resin article from a foamable composition comprising (a) a thermoplastic resin, (b) a gas forming blowing agent and (c) an additive capable of a high degree of energy absorption from an electromagnetic field comprises extruding the composition at a temperature below that at which the blowing agent decomposes to form a gas and then subjecting the unconfined composition in the open atmosphere to an electromagnetic field of sufficient strength to heat the composition to the decomposition temperature of the blowing agent and form a foamed thermoplastic resin article. Thermoplastic resins which may be used include cellulose ethers and esters, homopolymers and interpolymers of monomeric compounds containing the CH2=C< grouping such as olefins, vinyl halides, vinyl esters of carboxylic acids, vinyl ethers, unsaturated carboxylic acids and derivatives thereof, interpolymers of the abovementioned vinylidene monomers with a ,b -unsaturated polycarboxylic acids and derivatives thereof. A preferred class of materials includes homopolymers of vinylidene aromatic hydrocarbons and ring halogenated derivatives thereof, styrene polymers containing at least 70% by weight of styrene are especially preferred. Other suitable thermoplastic resins are polycarbonates, polyurethanes, polyethylene terephthalate, nylon and H.B.S. terpolymers. The additive is a metal such as aluminium, iron, powdered tin, cobalt nickel or a magnetic alloy such as nickel-copper, nickel-chromium, nickel-manganese, nickel-aluminium or magnetic iron oxide or barium titanate or carbon. The product of the process can be thermoformed to give a shaped product.
