Abstract
A foamable thermoplastic composition comprising a mixture of 95 to 35% by weight of virgin foamable polymer and 5 to 65% by weight of foamed recycle polymer is extruded after the recycle polymer has been precompacted to increase its bulk density. The composition may be extruded as a sheet and in this case one or both surfaces may be chilled by an air blast, air-water mist, water, nitrogen, argon or helium, to produce a non-porous skin integrally united to a porous core. Polymers which can be used in the process include styrene polymers such as crystal grade polystyrene, high impact polystyrene and mixtures of these, styrene polymers containing at least 50% by weight of styrene, cellulose ethers and esters, homopolymers and interpolymers of monomeric compounds containing the <FORM:1008569/C3/1> grouping, such as olefins, vinyl halides, vinyl esters of carboxylic acids, vinyl ethers, halogenated olefins, unsaturated carboxylic acids and derivatives thereof, interpolymers of the above-mentioned vinylidene monomers with a ,b -unsaturated polycarboxylic acids and derivatives thereof. Polycarbonates, polyoxymethylene, oxymethylene-alkylene oxide copolymers, polyurethanes, polyethylene terephthalate and nylon are also mentioned. The recycle polymer is precompacted so that it has a density of at least 65% of the density of the unfoamed polymer. Specification 1,008,568 is referred to.
