Abstract
Powdered polyethylene is formed into articles by, e.g., pressing and either during or after pressing sintering or plasticising the powder at 0 temperature not exceeding 350 DEG C. in a reducing atmosphere, e.g. hydrogen, carbon monoxide or water gas. The atmosphere may also contain an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen. The gas pressure may be atmospheric or, e.g., 10 to 200 atmospheres. The polyethylene is preferably one produced in the presence of a catalyst containing organometallic compounds, e.g. mixtures of titanium tetrachloride or zirconium or thorium acetyl, acetonate with diethyl aluminium chloride, aluminium triethyl or diisobutyl aluminium monochloride. The polymerization being effected at a pressure not exceeding 100 atmospheres and a temperature from 20 DEG to 100 DEG C. The reducing gases may be circulated through a preheater and a purifying device to remove oxygen. The particle size of the powder is preferably not greater than 0.25 mm. and the molecular weight is preferably greater than 500,000.ALSO:Powdered polythene is formed into articles by pressing and either during or after pressing, sintering or plasticizing the powder at a temperature not exceeding 350 DEG C. in a reducing atmosphere, e.g. hydrogen, carbon monoxide or water gas. The atmosphere may also contain an inert gas e.g. nitrogen. The gas pressure may be atmospheric or e.g. 10 to 200 atmospheres. The particle size of the powder is preferably greater than 0,25 m.m.
