Abstract
Low molecular weight solid polyolefins are prepared by heating a high molecular weight low pressure Ziegler solid polyolefin to 300 to 600 DEG C. in the absence of oxygen or other oxidising agent. The high molecular weight polyolefin may be decomposed in the presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst. A bleaching agent may be incorporated in the high molecular weight polyolefin before decomposition and an inert gas passed through the reaction mixture in a fluidized bed. The products generally have a molecular weight of from 500-2000. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, 80 ethylene-10 propylene, and butene-1 and copolymers thereof.
