Abstract

1,006,297. Rack and pinion steering gear; rubber bushes. STANDARD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Aug. 9, 1963 [Aug. 30, 1962], No. 33267/62. Headings F2Q and F2S. [Also in Division B7] In a steering gear wherein a rack 12 movable in a tube 19 is engaged by a pinion 13 on a shaft 14 journalled in a casing 15, the casing 15 and tube 19 are resiliently secured to chassis members 10, 11 through rubber bushes 24, 28 which are prestressed to reduce the transmission of shocks to the steering wheel on shaft 14. The casing 15 is shrunk on to the tube 19. The bushes 24, 28 have flat surfaces engaging the members 10, 11 and have flanges gripped respectively by a ledge 32 on casing 15 and by a plate 20 welded to tube 19. The bushes may be split to facilitate assembly and are engaged by U-shaped housings 21, 27 clamped to the chassis by U-bolts 30 engaging slotted plates 36 seating in the members 10, 11. A spring-loaded saddle 18 urges the rack 12 against the pinion 13.
