Abstract
1,005,433. Improving commutation in dynamo-electric machines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 5, 1962 [Jan. 5, 1961], No. 462/61. Heading H2A. In a commutator-type dynamo-electric machine, ionized gas is removed from the vicinity of the commutator surface by means of ducts connected to gas-exhausting means and provided with inlets adjacent the commutatorengaging surface of each brush of the machine. As shown in Fig. 1, the brush-holders 13 which are carried by arms 14 provide support for air ducts 15 made of an insulating material such as asbestos cement and provided with inlet slots 16 close to the position where the brushes engage the commutator. In a direct-current machine those ducts associated with the positive brushes are connected together through piping to a common air-extracting fan while the ducts associated with the negative brushes are likewise connected to a second fan; alternatively if de-ionizing means is associated with the piping from each duct, a single fan may be used to extract air through all the ducts of the machine. Fig. 4 shows an alternative form of duct system in which fresh air is forced in through duet 41, the ionized air being removed, as before, through duct 15. The extraction of air also removes wear products from and provides cooling for the brushes and commutator. The brushes may be set at an angle to the commutator or staggered circumferentially with respect to others on the same brush arm, Fig. 5 (not shown). The commutator may operate in a gas other than air.
