Abstract

1,005,326. Reciprocating pumps. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. May 28, 1964 [June 24, 1963], No. 21790/64. Heading F1A. [Also in Divisions B2 and B6] A piston comprising a ball 1 is moveable in a cylinder 2 in one direction by a solenoid coil 4 and in the other by a spring 3. The piston 1 is biased by the spring 3 to close an inlet 9 and is of such cross-section that liquid may flow between it and the cylinder. This clearance and the different speeds of the piston under the influence of the spring 3 and coil 4 results in liquid being drawn from the reservoir 10 and discharged at 8. Tubes connected to the outlets of several pumps may be arranged in a rectangle and be used for printing by suitable selective control of the pumps. By using coloured inks multi-coloured printing can be produced. It is stated that the apparatus is not in contact with the paper which is thus able to move freely and permits relatively high speed operation.
