Abstract

Carbon black is produced in a reaction chamber of circular cross-section by continuously introducing a reactant hydrocarbon stream of fluid in the chamber, passing the stream axially through the chamber without it contracting the peripheral wall, heating the stream in the zone to decompose the hydrocarbon to carbon black by heat interchange with a gaseous heat donating stream of fluid, and removing a portion of the stream containing the major portion of carbon black axially from the chamber and cooling to recover the carbon black, the heat donating stream being forced tangentially through the peripheral wall into the chamber near the inlet end and maintained at a sufficiently high velocity so that it forms a vortex which blankets the peripheral wall, a portion of the heat donating stream is removed at the outlet end. The heat donating stream may be preformed by mixing air or other oxygen containing gas or vapour externally of the furnace, or the air may be introduced alone and used to burn a portion of a suitable hydrocarbon gas, vapour or other combustible material within the furnace. The furnace may be cylindrical or tapered. The hydrocarbon reactant may be liquid or gaseous at NTP. The temperature of the heat donating stream may be 2700-3200 DEG F. at the inlet end and 2400-3000 DEG F. at the outlet, and the axial outlet stream is usually 2100-2700 DEG F.
